According to AppRiver, what is called the Locky strain of ransomware has again appeared. On August 28th,email messages containing the malware were sent to inboxes, just in time to start your Monday morning.
The messages were sent with subject saying: please print, scans, and documents. Locky was hidden in a ZIP file. Once the link was clicked, it started to find files to encrypt.
To those who clicked the link were also sent info on how to pay for the key to unlock your stuff (bitcoin). If you were not sure how to proceed, instructions were included on how to make the payment.
Really the only defense to this type of an attack is awareness and really good backups.
Stay aware my friends.
